Few but unforgettable appearances

Although an A-list icon, this was only her fourth Met Gala. She returned arm-in-arm with Marc Jacobs in 2015 in a sequin gown, and in 2019 she skipped the carpet to perform inside in a sheer jumpsuit with bright blue hair, singing hits including "Believe"—clips shared by Gwen Stefani.

The show and the museum

Cher said seeing people express themselves inspires her, a fitting sentiment as the Met’s spring exhibit "Costume Art," curated by Andrew Bolton, opens to the public from May 10, 2026 through Jan. 10, 2027.
