From set to space

Howard’s 1995 film Apollo 13 dramatized the true story of astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise, with Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton among the cast. The movie, noted for realism, earned nine Academy Award nominations and two wins, and famously used NASA’s reduced-gravity aircraft to simulate weightlessness.

Why Artemis II mattered

Artemis II marked NASA’s first crewed trip around the Moon in more than five decades and a key step toward returning humans to the lunar surface and eventually Mars. Launched April 1, the crew — Christina Koch, Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman and Jeremy Hansen — performed a lunar flyby that surpassed the Apollo 13 distance record, tested vital systems and later splashed down.
